Punctuations in English Language-Lesson1
Punctuation Definition:-They are certain symbols that are used in a sentence to make it more meaningful and understandable.
The different symbols used in the sentence helps the listener in understanding the feelings of the speaker.
The different types of symbols used in punctuation are listed below.
1)Comma(,)
2)Semicolon(;)
3)Colon(:)
4)Full stop(.)
5)Question(?)
6)Exclamation(!)
7)Single Quotes('')
8)Double Quotes("")
1)Comma(,)
Comma is used for a short pause(1 second approx..).
Example: Alexander, a great ruler once upon a time.
This is also used to separate parts of speech.
Example - Fruits, Vegetables keeps us healthy.
2)Semicolon(;)
Semicolon is used for separating independent clauses. It is a long pause more than used for comma(2 seconds approx..).
Example - Earth is blue in color; Orange is sour in taste.
3)Colon(:)
Colon is used for listing out. It is a longer pause more than used for Semicolon(3 seconds approx..).
Example - The two great forces are: Centrifugal force and Centripetal force.
4)Full stop(.)
Full stop marks that the sentence is completed. It is used at the end of the sentence.
Example - There is a dot at the end of this sentence which is called Full Stop.
5)Question(?)
Question mark is used as a interrogative statement.
Example - Are you going to the party tonight?
6)Exclamation(!)
Exclamation is used for expressions and feelings.
Example - Wow ! we won the match.
7)Single Quotes('')
Single Quotes are used for quotations and also used in direct speech.
Example - He says:' There are seven colors in the white light'.
8)Double Quotes("")
Single Quotes are used for titles, quotations, direct speech.
Example - "water" ,a vital element for survival.
